2021.02.10 | The Buddha went through so much difficulties to discover this Noble Path and reveal it to us, and all we have to do is walk along it. So, whether we are energetic, lazy, doubtful or impatient, we just carry on walking. In the end, we’ll get there.

Time consumes everything, including itself. The Buddha, therefore, taught us not to be heedless. We should endeavor to cultivate our inner virtues by being generous and moral, and making meditation practice a normal part of our everyday lives. If we can do this, in no long time we can realize the truth.

Everyone wishes for wisdom, and we all do have it to one degree or another to make our way in the world. But the wisdom that can illuminate the truth is a different kind—one that must be based on a virtuous and calm mind. This is what we gain through our practice.

The truth is right in front of our nose, so why don’t we see it? It’s because our minds are dark. Just as if there is no external light, we can’t perceive forms; when our minds lack radiance, they can’t understand Dhamma. When we settle our hearts down, however, they grow bright, and here wisdom can emerge.

In this videoconference talk from 19 February 2021, Ajahn Anan discusses Magha Puja, a holiday falling on February 26 this year.
This is the day the Lord Buddha gave the Ovada Patimokkha (which can be roughly translated as “Teaching on the Entryway to Liberation) to a group of 1,250 bhikkhus who had come together without any prior arrangement on the full moon day of the third lunar month (the Magha month), who were all fully enlightened with psychic abilities, and who were ordained by the Buddha himself. The Ovada Patimokkha contains the heart of the Buddha’s teachings, which is to refrain from evil, do good, and purify the mind.
Are we able to realise the fruits of this practice? Can we reach Nibbāna? This depends on us—how firmly we set our hearts on walking this path. And we can do it, no matter who we are, because the Dhamma is there for those who practise the Dhamma.

If you were asked what the purpose of your life is, how would you respond? Most people in the world can’t give a good answer because they don’t know. But, as Ajahn Anan tells us, the answer we can give depends on the energy in our hearts. As we practice further and our minds gain more clarity, we begin to uncover the highest purpose of them all.

2021.02.08 | Like leaves falling, the lives of beings in this world all must pass away. When we truly understand nature in this way—that it’s not sure—our hearts become sure.

Reaching our goals in our studies, professions, or in transcendent liberation, requires resolve and setting our minds on the task at hand. If we can do this without giving up, one day we will meet with success.
