2021.03.06 | Like a farmer looking after livestock, we practise keeping watch over the mind. Otherwise, the mind chases after sense impressions and moods and gets into trouble, like a cow getting into the crops.

In this videoconference talk from 26 March, 2021, Ajahn Anan discusses the various skills that one may have and develop in life.
“So someone who has an art or craft needs to have certain inner qualities. They need to have faith, and they need confidence in whatever they are doing. They need to believe that it is something truly good, and that it really has benefits. They have a heart that loves to do what they are doing. They are determined and firm to do it until they succeed.”

2021.03.06 | Suppose we have a glass of clean water, or some delicious food on a very beautiful plate, and some hair falls into that. Then immediately, we get the feeling that the food is unclean. The water that was pure before has now become dirty, and that happens instantly. We can contemplate the hair of the head, hair of the body, nails, teeth and skin, until samadhi arises and joy comes up.

2021.03.06 | Sila, virtue, is an important condition that we try to develop because it is what allows mindfulness and samadhi to come up, and this brings us a lot of benefits. When our samadhi is well-established, it will cultivate wisdom. When wisdom is established, then it will culminate in liberation.

We need to have an instrument to measure our hearts, to know how they are and what they’re doing. That instrument is mindfulness. When we are aware of our inner world, then we can adjust our practice according to its state. If our hearts are gloomy, there are many ways to lift them up.

2021.03.01 | The wise say Nibbāna is supreme, so we have to give it all we have to get there. But, at the same time, it’s not beyond what we are capable of.

2021.02.28 | If we focus externally, we’ll believe that our problems are caused by other people and the ways they treat us. If we look within, however, we’ll gain the accurate understanding that all our problems arise from attachment to a sense of self. This path takes us to putting down ‘me’ and ‘mine,’ thus freeing us from all difficulties and issues.
