With a human birth, we have an excellent opportunity to cultivate goodness. All the other beings—animals, hungry ghosts, and even devas—wish for a rebirth in this state. So, while we have it, we should make the most of it by creating merit, practicing meditation and understanding.

When we see the Dhamma, we see the Buddha, and our heart is Sangha. We see that the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha are actually one. When we see clearly like this, no doubts are left in the heart.

2021.10.09 | Some people are born with more innate talents than others. They learn and excel quickly in various fields. This is due to past efforts they have made. Whether we are born with a little or a lot of past merits and skills, we put forth effort in the present to see the Dhamma.

No matter what meditation method we use, it’s important to establish kindness in our hearts first so that it flows from this place of mettā. Really, all the aspects of the path—generosity, virtue and inner cultivation—are an expression of that kindness.

When we’ve come to understand the true worth of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha, all the wealth in the world won’t mean much to us. We see that it’s only stuff that we borrow, but it’s not actually ours.

2021.10.07 | Those who have trained their minds in meditation in the past can learn and understand things quickly. We can learn from the examples of Venerable Sariputta understanding Venerable Assaji’s brief teaching, and from Venerable Bhadda Kundalakesa, the Bhikkhuni foremost in quick understanding. We also reflect on the benefits of ordination.

2021.10.06 | While being dependent on and using the necessities of life—food, shelter, clothing and medicine—it’s important that we reflect on them, being aware of why we are using them. The same holds true for special practices we may take up; we need to understand what their purposes are.

In this videoconference talk from 29 Oct, 2021, Ajahn Anan talks about the inner peace that comes from having mindfulness. When we are able to know with mindfulness and wisdom, the various moods and sense objects as they arise, we can realise true peace.
“There was once when venerable Ajahn Chah was discussing Dhamma with a western monk, Ajahn Chah said that even if you go up to the moon, to Mars, or go anywhere at all, we will still have suffering there if our hearts don’t have right view. So we need to try to be able to train in this.”
In this talk, Ajahn Anan tells how viewing the body as being stable, a source of happiness, a self, and beautiful are insane perceptions that cause our hearts to be enveloped in darkness. When we perceive the body as unattractive, however, our minds turn bright and radiant.
